Antwerp to Dover

Wednesday 24th September. 11.15 am
Final goodbyes to Jan & Ghislaine in Antwerp, the lock opened and we were on our way. With the tide against us for the first part of our trip and little wind we had to motor.
As soon as the tide turned we hoisted the sails and switched the engine OFF. Then poled out the foresail and averaged 6 knots to Breskens. It was a really exhilarating trip. With sunshine astern as we arrived at port. All slept soundly.
We slipped Breskens and sailed for Dunkirk at 08.06 am. By now the whole crew were fully impressed with 'Piano's speed and ease of handling. The wind speed increased and by 14.00 we had set the Staysail and were flying along!
By 1900 we had moored in Dunkirk Port du Grand Large - next to a couple of Motor boats 'Irish Rover' and 'Fatum'. Both were heading south ultimately to the Mediterranean, they had a lock booked for the morning. We wish them well in their travels.
All crew had some time out on the Friday morning since the tide would have been against us if we had left early. Malcolm, Roger and I chilled out while Bob and Peter went into town and came back with fresh bread so we ate lunch before we set off.
Sails were set even before we left Dunkirk Harbour (13.00) and again we set the Yankee and Staysail. Even faster than yesterday we approached the mid channel parking area at 7-8 knots, which for me as a newbie seemed quite fast.We even raced with the Ferry!

We were at Dover Harbour entrance by 19.00. Champagne while we were waiting to enter the Marina, a quick bite to eat then out to watch the Fireworks. They were not especially for our homecoming but did make colourful end to the trip.
I hope all our voyages are as perfect.

The First Survey

Antwerp,Friday 29th August.
The day of the survey. 'Piano' was hauled out to enable the surveyor to carry out his survey.

Signing the Papers

Antwerp, Tuesday 16th September, 2008.
After a few days with a steep learning curve (changing the engine and generator oil, coolant and digging through the lockers of sails, outboard, spares, and many other tasks) Jan & Ghislaine invited their longstanding friends Mary Ann & Frank to witness them signing 'Piano' over to us.
This was followed by more champagne and nibbles while many salty seadog stories were shared. The day was rounded off wonderfully when we were all taken to a really sumptuous late lunch. Needless to say we walked it off along the Schelde.
Antwerp, Friday 15th, August 2007.
After a sunny day being shown around 'Piano' and a delightful lunch, followed by a short sail, we sat down to decide. A while later we signed the contract which we sealed with a glass of Champagne. We returned to England tired but enormously happy bunnies!

    • Seawater cooling is discharged through the exhaust, which is rubber-reinforced hose with its exit aft through a skin-fitting with valve.
    • A waterlock is fitted at the lowest point and the engine cooling water return is looped and vented to prevent syphoning.
  • Stern gear:

ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
  • Two 12-volt battery systems, one for engine starting of 105Ah capacity and one for domestic requirements of 210Ah capacity.
  • Charging is controlled by a solid-state electronic voltage regulator. Both battery systems are charged by engine alternator.
  • The batteries are secured in a covered, force-ventilated stowage.
  • Complete 220 volt shore power package, including 15m lead and plug, immersion heater in calorifier and automatic battery charger.
  • A voltmeter on the main switch panel may be switched to indicate the charge state of either battery system.
  • An ammeter at the switch panel shows the rate of domestic batter charge and discharge.
  • Wiring is by a two-wire system, carried throughout the yacht in conduit where required, protected by circuit breakers or fuses at the main switchboard.

Welcome

Welcome one and all !
We begin in Antwerp Belgium, where we viewed had a sail and decided to buy this AMAZING Bowman 45 Yacht. The image was taken during her previous owners time, no doubt there will be many more to follow. Luckily we are able to keep her name 'PIANO'. For anyone reading who already knows her the piano is staying in Antwerp with Jan and Ghislaine to remind them of the happy times on board.
